For one night in December, San Nicolas put its lights on and opened its doors. Galleries stayed open late, tables went up along the street, and the work of more than thirty of Aruba’s makers was out where everyone could see it. This is what the fifth edition looked like.
The making didn’t stop at the stalls. Inside ArtisA, tables filled with people who had never painted before — bottles, canvases, driftwood ornaments, hands covered in colour. Alejandra Valejo’s driftwood ornament workshop ran at 7 PM, AWG 95 a seat, materials and a hallaquita and ponche crema included. Every seat went.
Walls hung floor to ceiling — the eye prints, the small landscape canvases, the large abstract work — and visitors moving slowly through all of it. A fair that happens inside galleries is a different kind of fair.
Candles poured with soy wax. Crochet shell bags. Macramé and wire-wrapped stones. Ornaments cut from wood and lettered in Papiamento. Resin set with real Aruba beach sand. Every stallholder brought something they’d made themselves — a table of their own for AWG 35, or a booth we built for AWG 50.
After dark the street did the rest.
